Observation Narrative
Pond N105-8 , aka 'Litsea pond', a forested pond where the ground cover is entirely leaf litter excepting a few scattered individuals of Carex joorii and Carex albicans var. emmonsii. Plot runs more or less perpendicular to Rawinski's 1995 transect. Throughout the area, water level marks on the trees fluctuate on individual trees, ranging form 15 cm to 140 cm above the ground surface. The pond was completely dry on the date of this survey. Quercus lyrata, Nyssa biflora, and Liquidambar styraciflua are the dominant trees. This wetland is notable for containing one of a very few extant populations of the shrub Litsea aestivalis in Virginia.
